Setting Off

We have started a website! We’ll be traveling the United States in an 18 foot travel trailer. Just the two of us- Mallory and Jared – on the open road. We’re going on quite an adventure.

Our motto: “We’ll make it work, we always do.”

That proved true by just making this trip happen. Between planning, moving out of our little townhouse and working, we made the impossible possible. It was hectic and there were some arguments but we did it. We got our travel trailer about a month before we were leaving on our trip and named him Aljo.

Driving with the trailer was stressful. I don’t remember how many times other cars and trucks passed us. We went through multiple weather changes while driving but it was mostly just hot. We made multiple stops to check on the trailer and my small bladder. But we made it!

Our first stop was not full of luxuries or excitement – a Walmart parking lot in Yreka, CA. We were traveling to the Redwoods National Park so that would have been an 8.5 hours drive in one day. The only thing to do was to break our drive up to two days. Anyone who knows Jared or me knows that we aren’t early risers. We’re usually late so naturally, we had a late start leaving on our first day. We got to Yreka at about 7:45 PM and of course, it’s HOT. We’re boondocking (no hook-ups at all) so we don’t have any air conditioning or use of some of our appliances. One of the first things we did was plug our tiny fan into the portable battery that Jared brought. Instead of easily microwaving our leftovers for dinner, we had to use our stovetop to warm everything up. The next morning, we tried to use the portable battery for the coffee maker but there was not enough juice.

The overall experience of our first night was fine except for the heat. We’re learning what we need to do and what we can do without.

Check offerup and craigslist along your trip! Look for a small, inexpensive but capable generator and you won’t have to worry about any more AC-less nights 🙂
